ALABASTER

Alabaster art and sculpture have been prized for thousands of years. The stone is a variety of gypsum; a beautiful, translucent, fine-grained stone similar to marble, and the two stones are often confused. Alabaster has been quarried for centuries in Italy and Egypt. Although most so-called alabaster artifacts from ancient Egypt and Rome are actually marble.

Flame

Flame won 2nd Place  in the  3D category  at the

  Gilpin Annual Juried Art Show

Alabaster is a fun, colorful, and easy stone to carve. Again, having no vision, I started smoothing out this chunk of rock you see in the slide show, and Flame showed up. I really wanted to keep the rough natural untouched part of the stone but as it goes, Flame kept coming out.

I was so pleased when three of my stone pieces were accepted in the Gilpin Annual Juried Art Show  Flame, Horse Flower, and Fan Shell.

I was delighted when Flame won 2nd Place in the 3D category.

    Horse Flower

Can you see the albino horse head in one of the photos?

This piece was inspired by a wilted flower on my windowsill. I am always looking at nature for inspiration. As I was sanding, I saw the image of an albino horse's head, thus the name.  I love it when I see images in pieces.

I was so pleased when three of my stone pieces were accepted in the Gilpin Annual Juried Art Show: Flame, Horse Flower, and Fan Shell.

I was delighted when Flame earned 2nd Place in the 3D category.

Later, Horse Flower was honored 1st Place in 3D at the Lincoln Gallery Juried Show in July 2021.

An alabaster stone sculpture shaped like a moon with a hole and a crescent moon on top.

This is my first sculpture that stirred my

      love for stone carving.

Although this light green alabaster piece is sold, I have added it to my gallery because this stone piece is what stirred my love for stone carving.

For a birthday celebration, my husband gifted me with a chunk of alabaster, a hammer, and some chisels. I just started chipping away with no idea what I was doing or wanted to make. To boot, this was my first sold piece! Oh, for the joy of it all. I was addicted! I was now a "stoner".
