Soapstone is often used in art and sculptures.
A metamorphic rock that consists primarily of talc with varying amounts of other minerals such as micas, chlorite, amphiboles, pyroxenes, and carbonates. It is a soft, dense, heat-resistant rock that has a high specific heat capacity. These properties make it useful for a wide variety of architectural, practical, and artistic uses.
Never get bored with this stone sculpture!
Twisted Fossil is a two-part (sculpture and a base) free-standing piece that can be arranged in various positions and views on its turntable base.
As I was carving this stone, stubbornly, I kept hitting a spot that would not budge. After I rinsed the spot, I was amazed to find a fossil imprint, thus the name. Sadly, nothing remained of the original creature.
I can only imagine millions of years ago what small critter dug its tunnels in the mud.
7h x 11w x 7d in. 5 lbs.
African Granite Turntable Base
$1200
Although this piece was gifted, I want to show this soapstone as it was my second direct carving, thus the non-professional photographs.
8h x 4.5w x 3d in. Gifted
This direct carving is an early work that earned my first award in 2010: an Honorable Mention Award at the Gilpin Art Show in Central City, CO.
My stone carving future was confirmed when it SOLD at the show!
Another of my earlier direct carve pieces. Yes, a poor photo (my inexperience is showing) but the stone was fun to form. As I look at it now I see a spot that could be its eye. Gifted.
