After The Dance
In my late 30's, I joined a sculpting group with a shared model. This was my first experience playing with clay. Not knowing what I was doing, I created this piece. The host of the group decided to fire the clay without asking me if I was finished. A little upsetting! However, after doing a faux patina, I began to appreciate what I accomplished.
Fast forward thirty years later, since I enjoyed her so much I decided to cast her as a bronze using the lost-wax process. We gave her a turntable walnut base so she could be seen from many angles. A few years later a woman named Cindy from my community saw the bronze and exclaimed "I see you have been in the Tom Ware(house) group". Astonished, I asked how she knew. She smiled and revealed that she was the model! Now we are very good friends!
Little did I know, I titled the sculpture "After the Dance". Later, Cindy mentioned that she had been a dancer! Interestingly, the woman who bought the sculpture explained she wanted this bronze because she was a former dancer.
